Canal Boat Hire - Frequently Asked Questions.
If you have a question that we have not covered below, please feel free to contact us by email and we will do our best to help you with your canalboat hire query.
Do I need some sort of license to operate a canalboat?
No, you will not need a license and we give you all the training you need to
get started (all included in the price).
Is the canalboat difficult to operate?
No. There is only forward and reverse gears and the canalboat should only be operated at 3 miles an hour on the canals. The canals are mostly current free.
Where can we stop?
You can moor up on the canalbank as long as you are not outside private property, obstructing the canal or in a lock area. We supply mooring pegs that you drive into the bank if there are no tie off points. You also have the option of mooring in a marina if spaces allow. There is a cost for this.
What about fresh water and waste tank emptying?
Water is free and we give you a British Waterways key on arrival so that you can fill up when needed along the way. We do of course fill the water tank for you before departure. Diesel, gas and pump-outs (if necessary)
are included in the price you pay and should be suficient for your stay. If you do run out or need a pump out, please keep your receipt and we will reimburse you upon return.
When do I collect and return my hire boat?
We ask that you arrive at 1:30pm on your arrival day in order to provide sufficient
time to check-in, load the boat and receive the training and tour. On your day of departure, you will need
to vacate the canalboat no later than 9:30am.
Is there car parking at the marinas?
Yes, free car parking is available at all our canalboat marinas.
Is there mains electric on board?
Yes, the boat has 240v (UK Mains) sockets which accept 3 pin plugs. Electricity
is produced from the engine and stored in 12v leisure batteries. An inverter then converts the 12v to 240v electricity. You will need to run the engine for periods to keep the batteries topped up. Please do not bring any electrical equipment over 1000w.
Do I need insurance?
The boat and contents are fully insured, but we do have an excess on our insurance so we recommend that you take out the £45.00 damage waiver, then if you do have an accident you do not have to worry. The only thing that is not insured by us are (a) your car which is probably protected under your motor policy and (b) your personal possessions which are also probably covered under your house contents insurance but please check your own policies carefully.
Canal maps & Guides ?
We sell canal maps and guides at our marinas (subject to stock).
You can also buy maps online if you prefer.
Is there someone we can contact if we have a problem?
Yes, our friendly engineers are on hand twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies. Your safety and enjoyment are our paramount concern.
Do you operate day hire boats?
No, our canal boats are unstuitable for day hire as they have accommodation on them. Our minimum rental period is 3 nights, but you can bring the boat back earlier if you wish.
